What Does a School Counselor Do?
We are here to help students achieve their greatest potential academically, socially and emotionally by developing a comprehensive guidance plan based on the NC Guidance Curriculum and American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) National Model. Classroom guidance lessons, individual counseling, small group counseling, and parent consultation are some of the main interventions used by a School Counselor. These interventions are detailed below.
Small Group CounselingCounseling small groups allow children to develop coping skills, a sense of belonging and to realize that they are not alone in their concerns. Groups typically run for 4-6 weeks and meet once a week for a 35- 40 minute period. Times for groups are coordinated with classroom teachers to minimize time away from instruction. Nominations for counseling groups are based on feedback from teachers, administrators, and families. Small Groups are flexible and change each year based on current needs of students. Small Group Topics for this year include:
Social Skills, Coping with Big Feelings, Friendship, Positive Self-Esteem, Mindfulness / Worry Warriors, Emotional Regulation, and/or Growth Mindset for School Success |
Individual CounselingIndividual counseling is provided to students on a short-term basis based on specific needs. Parental permission is obtained prior to any extended individual or group counseling. Students are seen by the counselor when:
*Parents request and indicate a need and desire that the counselor meet with their children *Students request counseling *Teachers, administrators or other school staff refer the student |
Classroom GuidanceIn addition to individual and small group counseling, we also reach students through monthly classroom guidance lessons to cover different topics as well as our Character Education Traits. Here is a look at our Curriculum Map for this year:

Parent ConsultationWe are available to meet with parents individually and/or at parent/teacher conferences. Parents can call or email to set up an appointment. We can also help with outside resources and provide tutoring lists for outside academic support. We are always happy to help in any way we can, so please do not hesitate to ask!
